U.S. Huntsville Land Office - list of mineral lands, ca.1883.

An 1883 Apr. 9 circular letter from the U.S. Land Commissioner informed Ala. district land offices that an 1883 Mar. 3 act of the U.S. Congress reclassified all Ala. land as agricultural, regardless of any previous designation. These lands were to be offered for sale and were available for homesteading. The act was meant to encourage the development of the state's mineral resources. The letter instructed Registers to prepare a list of all lands previously reported as mineral which had not yet been entered. This volume lists mineral lands in the Huntsville Land District by location with a designation of the type of mineral reported (generally coal or ore). This volume documents the U.S. Government's encouragement of industrial development in the state.
